Week of 1/30/2017

Ahoy!
I hope this week is treating you all well. We are off to a great start in our classroom. This is a very busy time of year for third graders. We have a lot of learning to do and a lot of fun to be had. Here is what we are working on this week.

Reading: We are continuing to read The Year of Miss Agnes. The students seem to really be enjoying it. With this text we are working on how a character's actions can help a story move along. This directly correlates to what the students are working on in writing on their fictional narratives.

Writing: Students are working on writing a fictional narrative. Their task was to create a character from Athabasca and write about them. The biggest addition to their writing this week is the idea of dialogue and how to successfully use it.  They learned about how to place quotation marks and the punctuation that is associated with dialogue.

Math: This week we are focusing on multi-digit subtraction on a number line.  We are not currently working on using standard algorithm for solving problems. This will come later; however, my goal is for my students to understand the why behind the algorithm. Please continue working on multiplication facts. By the end of the year they will need to know through times 10.

Science: This week we are continuing our study on weather. We are looking at how the weather in the Arctic, Antarctic and Camas compare to one another.

Week of 1/23/17

Ahoy!

Hope you are all enjoying your week. We are back to a full week here at school. It has been great getting to reconnect with your kiddos and start some in depth work. Here is what we are doing!

Reading: This week we are reading The Year of Miss Agnes. It is a historical fiction book centered around a teacher living in rural Alaska during the 1940's. We are focusing on looking at how a character's actions move a story along. We are encouraging the students to read like they are a writer. We want them to see that there are different things a author does that helps a story develop and move along. When reading at home with your child, stop and ask what actions the main character has done that helps to move the story along.

Writing: Using the story that we are reading and previous information that the students have learned about the Athabascans in Central Alaska, we are having students write their own historical fiction piece. The are creating their own characters, setting, and plot. I am very excited to see how the student's writing changes as they learn more about this very unique area and the unique people who live in it.

Math: In math we are working on adding multi-digit numbers. Our main focus has been on using a number line to accurately add two numbers together. The end of this week and into next week we will begin using the number line to subtract multi-digit numbers. Very soon we will start our timed multiplication quizzes! It is very important that students are practicing their multiplication facts every night!

Science: Today we began our new unit on Weather. Over the next few weeks students will be recording the weather in Delta Junction, Antarctica, and Camas.

Week of 1/9/17

Ahoy!

Can you believe all of the snow that we are getting! I have enjoyed watching the flakes fall and being able to sleep in... but I am so ready to have a full week with my kids! Here is what we are going to be doing if this week's weather cooperates.

Reading: We are learning about the Athabascans of Central Alaska. Our focus is on finding the main idea and supporting details of a text. Asking ourselves what the text is mostly about is a great way to focus in on the main idea.

Writing: Using the text that we are reading, the students will begin creating a fictional story about an Athabascan. We will be researching more about these people and how they live their lives. Students will then be taking that and applying it to their writing.

Math: This week we are diving into our new math unit. At the end of last week we started working on rounding to the nearest 10's. We will continue working on this, talking about how we can then round to the nearest 100's or 1000's. We also learned a new strategy for adding today called "give and take". We will be working on using this strategy the rest of the week. For example. When adding 99+36 students can take one from the 36 and give it to the 99 to create 100+35. Look for a green handout that came home today which helps to explain what your student will be learning in this unit; as well as some the strategies that we will be focusing on.

Homework:
Students have math homework this week. It is due on Friday.
No spelling this week.

Mystery Questions:
Students need to write 10 compound words down in their very neatest handwriting. To be turned in on Wednesday if we have school. If not turn in Thursday.

Events to Remember:
1/13- Family Game Night @6:00 pm.
1/16- No School MLK day.

Thanks for all you do to help your child!

Week of 1/3/17

Wow! Can you believe 2017 is here?!

It was a great first day back at school with our students. In music the class received a giant purple spotcha; the music teacher informed me that she didn't have to redirect the class one time, that they were practically perfect! Music to a 3rd grade teacher's ear :) Here is what is happening this week in 204/205!

Reading: This week we are starting our next reading unit! Students will be learning about the Athabascan Natives in Central Alaska. We will be focusing on finding the main idea of the text and using evidence to support our main idea.

Writing: Students are studying subject/predicate. They will also be starting to write a new narrative at the end of the week.

Math: Tomorrow will be our first day of Unit 3 in math. We will be working on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Keep an eye out for a handout coming home giving an overview of the unit.

Auction: The auction will be held this Friday. It will begin at 12:45. If you would like to come and help please try to be here a little early. Parents are always welcome.

Report Cards are coming home on Wednesday.

There is no spelling or homework this week.

Mystery Question.... that's not really a question at all.
If student has an emergency number (home phone, parent cell phone, etc.) memorized they will receive $10.

Dates to Remember:
1/4- Character Education Assembly
1/4- Report Cards come home
1/13- Family Game Night @ 6:00 pm

Hope you had a great Christmas Break!
